Amazon negative keywords: exact vs phrase and a safe workflow
Negative keywords stop ads from serving on unwanted customer searches. Used precisely, they remove repeat waste. Used broadly or too early, they cut discovery and sales. The decision belongs at search-term level, with enough settled data and a clear audit trail.
Start with the search term, not the keyword
A target is what you bid on; a search term is what the shopper typed. One broad or auto target can match many useful and useless searches. Pausing the target removes both. Negating the proven bad search term keeps the discovery engine running.
Use negative exact for one proven bad query
Negative exact blocks that search term without intentionally blocking longer or different queries. It is the safer default when one term has accumulated meaningful clicks or spend with no attributed orders, or when the term is clearly irrelevant to the product.
Use negative phrase only for a bad query family
Negative phrase is wider: it can suppress searches containing the phrase. Use it when the phrase expresses an intent the product cannot satisfy, not merely because one variation failed to convert. Review affected converting terms first so a broad exclusion does not remove profitable demand elsewhere.
Let economics define the threshold
Do not use a universal click count. A EUR 12 product and a EUR 120 product cannot share the same evidence threshold. Compare zero-sale spend with the contribution profit available from one order, then add a minimum-data guardrail. Exclude recent unsettled days so delayed attribution does not turn a future converter into a false negative.
Check five things before applying a negative
Confirm the marketplace and campaign; check whether the term converts in another campaign; decide exact versus phrase; preserve a discovery route; and record where the negative was submitted. After the write, read Amazon's response and verify the negative exists. A sent request is not the same as a confirmed change.
Turn the report into a controlled action queue
Sniper Hub applies the same guardrails to live Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands data: settled windows, persistent-waste detection, exact/phrase choice, cooldowns and Amazon confirmation. Nothing is changed until the seller approves it.
