How to calculate Amazon FBA profit margin before setting a price
Revenue is not profit, and a price is not safe merely because it exceeds product cost. A useful Amazon price covers VAT, landed cost, Amazon fees, advertising and operating reserves before it produces contribution profit. Calculate per SKU and marketplace because fees and tax differ.
Use contribution profit, not a markup shortcut
Contribution profit = net selling price - landed product cost - referral fee - fulfilment fee - advertising reserve - returns reserve - storage reserve.
For a VAT-inclusive consumer price, first isolate VAT using the marketplace rate. Landed cost should include purchase, freight, duty and preparation. Use the current fee for the actual size tier, not an old catalog average.
Choose one margin denominator and label it
Contribution margin normally divides contribution profit by revenue net of VAT. Markup divides profit by cost. They are not interchangeable. A EUR 5 profit on EUR 10 cost is a 50% markup, but on EUR 20 net revenue it is a 25% margin. Store the formula with the result so teams do not compare two different percentages as if they were the same KPI.
Reserve variable costs before calling the price profitable
Advertising is not optional for most ASINs. Apply an estimated ACOS reserve to the revenue expected to come from ads, or use a conservative blended advertising allowance. Add return and storage reserves from the SKU's own history where possible. A price with no reserve can look profitable in the calculator and lose money in the monthly P&L.
Separate list price, sale price and minimum viable price
The list price can preserve the target margin. The planned sale price must still cover all costs at its own lower revenue. A minimum viable price is a guardrail, not a recommendation: below it, the unit no longer funds the required profit or reserve. Apply marketplace price endings only after the economics are correct.
Recalculate when fees or costs change
FBA fee changes, exchange rates, landed costs and category referral rates can move the safe price without any visible catalog change. Keep the previous fee long enough to identify the gap, but calculate the new recommendation from the current value. Do not compound old daily snapshots into the price input.
